TEMPO artist/producer/guitarist TI WILL breaks down the difference between a VOCALIST and SINGER, as well as the difference between a MUSICIAN and INSTRUMENTALIST. For those of you who might not know the difference, it is a good read.
_________________________________________________________

TI WILL: "I was elaborating on a couple of points with a friend of mine which I feel necessary to share with my KM family! Most people dont really pay attention between certain terms that are very much different. Here are a couple of them!

SINGER/VOCALIST, INSTRUMENTALIST/MUSICIAN. I pinpoint some key differences between being a singer and a vocalist; musicians and instrumentalist.... And they go as follow:

Singer: Being a singer allows one to produce musical sounds with the voice, and augments regular speech by the use of both tonality and rhythm. Every singer has their own style, sound and tone. A coach/vocalist may help a singer in becoming a better singer or even a great singer/vocalist! but NOT the other way around.

Vocalist is a vocal musician. He or she has a variety of techniques/principles that a regular singer doesnt have. For example, a good vocalist knows when and how to use what we call "voix de tete"; crescendo, decrescendo etc... Perfect example I can use here is Mr Louis Armstrong!!! Great vocalist, but NOT a great singer in my opinion. A great vocalist is like a coach ! Knows all the rules and regulations of the game, but NOT necessarily good in the actual field. In other words school can produce/create a vocalist but never a singer.

Instrumentalist is a player on a musical instrument or an exponent of instrumentalism. For example John may be great at playing the guitar, piano, sax, bass etc... and doesnt know the fundamentals of the instrument or of what he is executing. Playing by ear does not make one a musician. It's just executing what's been memorised as opposed to reading a musical piece.

Musician: A musician is a person who performs, writes, and read music. In the real world where MUSICIANS operate, writing and reading music is a MUST. One may be a musician and not an intrumentalist and vice versa or can be both at the same time.

I wish every one a happy new year 2011. May God bless you all and your family... prosperite, longevite, sante, and MONEY Smile

TI WILL!

Very interesting stuff

Maybe Ti Will is right but to me it is parsing of words and the real differences maybe slight if not non-existent.

T Will thanks for the info and let me borrow a quote from your explanations where you said:

Most of our artists are playing by ears.

Where would Ti Will categorize himself?

I am not sure I agree with these definitions.

diferans sa yo se nan lide ti will yo ye.

There is a difference between a singer and a vocalist?

a singer uses the voice to sing notes. Which makes them a vocalist.

an instrumentalist is playing music.... which makes them a musician.

Just because someone cannot read music, doesn't mean you are not a musician. the personhas an understanding to some extent of what they are doing. Otherwise they would not be able to replicate the sound they just heard. How do you know a C when you hear it so that you play it on your instrument? HOw do you know a e flat when you hear it?

Some people who read music cannnot play by ear if their life depended on it. So to me it is just a matter of skill.

In fact I think it is an advantage to play by ear because music theory can easily be learned. Not so easy to learn to play by ear. It's a gift.

Ti will needs to make these differences more clear for me because quite frankly, it is not sinking in for me.

Good stuff T-Will... Very Happy Very Happy
I will add that a good vocalist is gifted with a great voice but does not not to have great rythm and tonality automatically.

Great singers sing with expression, articualtion, rythm and have great soul. They do not have to have a beautiful voice. However they do connect to the audience better than a great vocalist.

I like the Armstrong example as agreat vocalist but not a great singer. i will also add PIPO and Jude Jean into that list. However singers like KINOP, GRACIA, GAZZMAN, Michael Guirand... to name a few are considered great singers although they do not have the greatest voice in the business. Singer like CUBANO is always considered like a greater singer than his bandmate ZOUZOULE although ZOUZOULE is a better vocalist.

Now KM members can have a better understanding why CUBANO did not have the PIPO, JUDE JEAN, ARMSTRONG in his list of choice because his concern was not about the singers with the greatest voice, but the ones who make an impact on him as far as soul, feeling...!!!!

I believe they owe CUBANO an apology.. Wink

T-WILL, again great insight...!!!!
