According to CARIMI maestro RICHARD CAVE, he was talking to a DJ the other day at SAM ASH, and the DJ explained to him WHY Zouk became more popular than Compas.

RICHARD CAVE: "The DJ explained to me that because of the BBM (Beats per minute...HOW FAST/SLOW a song is) issue, ZOUK was MORE POPULAR for DJS to spin at clubs/parties than the Compas that was being played at the time (Circa mid-1980's when Kassav and others started the movement). The DJ explained that ALL or MOST of the ZOUK songs would RETAIN THE SAME COMPUTERIZED BBM (Same speed on the beat) throughout the whole song, which made it easier for them to MIX THE ZOUK SONGS into each other, whereas the COMPAS songs at the time would CHANGE SPEEDS on a song a couple of times or more during the same song. The DJ told me that YO PITO PA JWE COMPAS NAN CLUB LA because of that...it was NOT easy to mix, so instead of having people think that the DJ is no good at mixing, they chose to instead NOT play the Compas. ZOUK was MORE DJ FRIENDLY, and this DJ told me that a LOT of DJS told him that they did the same thing."

RICHARD explains that the DJ was very popular and used to play a lot of parties. He is from Haiti and Martinique.

From a techincal stand-point, Richard is 100%. I mean 100%. It is a lot easier to mix Zouk.

But I think it goes a lil further.

Haitians LOVE what is not theirs.

So in essence, Zouk is not Haitian music but still close enough for a Haitian to be familiar with it.

But what kills me is how many Haitians dance or listen to Zouk do not even know what they are dancing to lyrically.

So its sorta en vogue to listen to Zouk. **shrugs**

Everyone has what they like I guess.

I find Zouk to be very bland and uncreative. They are only a few Zouk songs that stand out creatively to me.

I think these are a bunch of poor excuses!!!

I think at one point... zouk was more attractive than konpa.. point blank...

and just like now... konpa is a bit more attractive than zouk... even though in little clubs, they are playing more zouk songs than konpa.. but it's because those djs considered those zouk nights as something de finesse... where love is in the air... but zouk is clearly not the same anymore... they are good only for zook nights...
it's vice versa... chak industri gen yon periode de baisse... se normal...
men ti rezon sa pa valab dapre mwen... depi mizik konpa an bon...dj yo ap mate'l... Cool

Se pa manti non...
Se sak fè konn gen DJ ki konn akséléré mizik yo ou bien yo ralanti yo pou yo ka bien mixé.
Sak pi anrajé a piblik la lagé nan bouda yo pi red paske yap di se pa konsa mizik la yé...

Ah, i would agree with ziip, it is pure excuse
When kassav was kassav, say they were popular and that was it
Remember at the same time, skah shah pa gen moun ki ta manyen li nan zafe kompas ansanm ak tabou wi
Therefore, bobine file neg la ap bagay la
Yes, zouk may have been easier, but that was not a reason to play zouk over kompas

True and that was then.

Now we have Serato and many different softwares that could maneuver the speed perfectly. Now a DJ has no excuse mixing Kompa and Zouk.

That is a POOR/LAME EXCUSE...

KEEP PRACTICING...

Just cause you can play records at parties does NOT make you a TRUE DJ...

Se problem nan sa... ADAPT... GET WITH THE PROGRAM

Bunch of lazy DJs

Si pa't gen ZOUK, the art of DJing would have been non existent within our entertainment circles?

See how you don't make sense.... ou PA kapab... Pa pale'l mal, DON'T BASH IT if you CAN'T KEEP UP....

That's just wack

Mwen pa wer poukisa anpil moun ap blame haitiens paske yon apprecier yon mizik lot nation...Mwen panse ke nou hyprocrite et egoiste en minm tan.

Ler Djazz nou yo al jwe ZENITH se plis moun lot nationalite ki al gade yo et nou fier de sa...Si moun lot kote yo di yo pap aprecier bagay etranjer ki sa nou pral fer. Nap precher Egoiste ak nationalism epi nou vle mizik pa nou an crossover....Sa se Hyprocrisie.

Fanatik la libre ak kob nan poch li pou li depanse l jan li vle....Epi anpil nan nou gin jersey BRESIL ak Argentine, pa yon Jersey national soccer team Haiti ya....Mezanmi bay moun tet yo... Wink
