Who said Konpa can't cross over...?
I said in a post when I first joined the Konpa online community that they will not come to us...we have to go to them and see how they like it....
When I said that it's because here in DC/MD in my days with Zepon we did many shows for the international community and our music was always welcomed.
Playing at Brasserie Creole and the likes will not give the exposure to any band...but if every young working Haitians and Haitian students going to the Konpa fest take it upon themselves to invite their non Haitian friends to major festivities then we might stand a chance. What we do here is to sell our product to different places and this invitation for a show in Baltimore this past WEDNESDAY...(YES WEDNESDAY) is a testimony that it can be done....that there is hope for Konpa and that good music can make the language barrier mute.
A picture is worth a thousand words....then my friends you be the judge....

Bon agimal,
why couldn't it americans enjoying kompa, why must it be WHITE AMERICANS
you hit the nail right on the spot when you stated that each one of us should invite one of our non haitian friends to one of our festivities but you really killed it when made that statement about white americans enjoying kompa, then again may be you were too happy to have WHITE AMERICANS dancing to the beat of rafrechi
Food for thought my brother

Food for thought my brother

In my life I played for all kind of people down here...Zepon was a regular at the Kunta Kinte Festival an African American festivity in Annapolis....and I played at FRENCH Embassy for Bastille Day.....I was just being SPECIFIC in my report...Anything wrong with that....Did you see the part on my reply where I said that the band will be playing at an ETHIOPIAN CLUB tomorrow....Anything wrong with that specification too.....SPECIFIC....Just like I mentioned it when the band got invited to the HISPANIC FESTIVAL D.C FIESTA....once again SPECIFIC... and the reports about the CARIBBEAN FESTIVALS.....once again being SPECIFIC....why is it that when I get SPECIFIC about this particular group...it raises your eyebrows....LET IT GO...we have a Black President....my brother...Let it go...feel free to call a cat a cat without feeling the weight....Let it go...Food for thought...my brother...
Mwen pa guen foli blan....my grandfather was white...and so are many members of my family. He was the only VIVENS who went to Haiti...His others brothers children and grandchildren are still in France and we all go to visit them sometimes....and they come to visit us too here in the U.S....
And to answer your question...YES I WAS HAPPY...DANM IT I WAS SO FREAKING HAPPY...to see White Americans NOT only dancing to the beat of RAFRECHI....BUT dancing to the sound of KONPA....because SO MANY OF US in this business are still too GOD DANM afraid to go after that market but feeling comfortable at Labadie..Cafe Alta...and Brasserie...for a life time...simply for the FEAR OF REJECTION....If you know what I mean.....Food for thought again...my brother...
You may call Fabrice Rouzier who used to play keyboard for Zepon when he was studying here at the University of Maryland, and he will tell you that my idea as a musician was never to play for the same people all the time...but to expose our music to different people as much as possible....and Zepon performed at many great shows for 12 years without having to compete with any other band in the HMI...just another marketing strategy...Now I will work hard to continue such project with the young musicians of DC/MD....So far the marketing plan is working for Rafrechi with upcoming shows for different Embassies...and we may get a show in 2011 at the Kennedy Center....In case you don't know it, the Kennedy Center is where the U.S presidents go to concerts....It's one of the most prestigious venues in America...Nap **** li Konpa...lè jou sa va rive... Laughing Laughing Laughing
