MIZIK DEPOT executive producer BAZILE JEAN BERTHOL told Kompa Magazine that HIS SECRET to battle bootlegger's on the market is simple: "DEAL WITH THEM by selling them the original/legal cds at a price close to what it would cost them to make the bootlegs, that way they can purchase and sell the cds LEGALLY without having to worry about their backs."

We asked him if it was THE RIGHT TIME for him to be producing a lot of cds on the market, given the current state of the business due to the bootlegs, and that prompted the answer above.

It can easily cost a bootlegger less than $2 to make a bootleg CD. How is selling a legit and true studio CD for $2 going to give the band at hand a revenue off of that product? Let's not even mention the distributor's cut ! As a distributor, you should at least make $1 / CD if things are really bad out there. I'm curious to see how this tactic will benefit anyone. Patchouko can you find out what numbers are being used to come to that conclusion/solution? Just curious... We need to make an example, and I mean a REAL example out of ONE bootlegger, just to show that the people spending their money, sweat, talent, time and effort to create a and produce a solid product really mean business.

Is Bazile sure about what he is talking about.

It cost those Bootleggers close to nothing to reproduce those CDs.

How much he is gonna give those legit CDs for?

Bazile

Thanks for your analysis because for me it opened my eyes real good. I got a good feeling the bootlegging racket is a mob based thing. If you pay your dues neg sa yo pap manyne'w and they make sure others will not either. If not, well your product is at the mercy of certain homies kap jere ti sa pou ou!!!!.

Bazile makes sure his business is right et lot yo well good luck!

Well if he sells the cds at $5 i believe a lot of ppl are going to buy the original production. What s going to happen bootlegers have to drop their price to $3 or may be 2 cds for $7. The Bootlegers still spent money ppl. They buy the blank cds. If more ppl start buying the original cds that will make some of them stop selling the bootlegs.
I think that the distrubutors need to sell the cds at a reasonable price. One thing I hate the price of a cds could be $10 or $12 but never go down. the store owners need to have the at $12 or $10 then drop it to another price when the album is old. If it is like that some ppl will buy the cd when it $7 or $8.

I've been eyeing this post for awhile.... if you wanna stop bootleggers, this is how you do it:

1. Go legit.... register your material as yours.. Copyright them so you can actually prove that the bootlegged items are 'yours'..

2. Pay your taxes..this way you build your business legitimacy

3. Report the bootlegging scheme to the police and have them start a sting operation (this might take a couple of months, even years for them to gather more evidence.

3a. If you mean business, go undercover. Send a couple of your friends to buy their CDs and videotape it.

4. Watch them hit the slammer!

5. Make sure all haitian media publish the news

Yef, I like that plan you know. Laughing

So, Berthol's mindset is basically "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." LOL I can understand why he may feel that way but I would not go that route at all. Offer customers more incentives to purchase your product. Find ways to make purchasing them more convenient. How? You would have to pay a fee to find out. Laughing Wink Cool Arrow

That can't stop the Bootleg, only thing they need to do is getting to the technolgy deeply by find a way to stop anyone rip the Original CD to the PC and copy it to another CD. Where they should put a code to the Original CD and I am sure it can work that way.
