I remember when people went to school to study something they had a genuine interest in, accounting/finance, social work, psychology, law etc. Now, most people are switching majors and/or going straight into the medical field. More specifically, Nursing. It seems that you cannot speak to 5 people (especially Haitians lately) that aren't either in nursing school, trying to get into nursing school or are already nurses. Now, the interesting thing is, out of those 5 you're lucky to find 4 who're in it because they love/like it. It's all about the money. Don't get me wrong, in today's economy, it is ONE of the most stable career choices and I love money just as much as anyone else but... what about teaching, engineering, human resources, accounting, computer techs??? The other day, I attended a family gathering and everytime I told someone I wasn't a nurse, I saw a disappointed look on their face. Almost as if no other profession on earth is worth anything.

If you have/had a child, would you still encourage them to pursue their dreams or stuff them into the nearest nursing school?

Ahhh, finally, someone who understands It's gotten to the point where if someone says they're going into any other field, I feel as if I want to do back flips.

... This is an interesting topic esp for us Haitians... Nursing is like the THING.. Out of HS, I left and attended college to pursue nursing in New York. I wasn't passionate about it, I just knew everyone in my family thought I'd be a good nurse..ect. so I said okay. A year and a half into school, I gave my adviser the middle finger and said heck w you and this nursing crap! It's not for me.. When I told my surroundings that I am no longer pursuing nursing.. OMG.. I wouldn't hear the end of it! I switched and pursued something that I am very much passionate about, which is Criminal Justice.. But boy did I hear it! Pou kisa ou pa pran Nursing pito!? My mouth would get fresh after some time and simply replied because I don't want to. Epi thats it.

I would never encourage anyone to do anything they don't want to do or feel passionate about! Its a waste of precious time.. and hard earned money.. lekol pa che! Learned that the hard way!

I WOULD ENCOURAGE MY KIDS OR WHOEVER IT MAY BE, TO FOLLOW THEIR HEARTS, AND DO WHAT THEY GOOD AT ANYTHING THAT THEY ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT. MOST PARENTS WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO LIVE THEIR DREAMS, BECAUSE THEY PROBABLY DID NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO IT, THEY JUST WANT YOU SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY. Most of the ladies at my church are either nurses, enrolled in the nursing program or trying to get admitted into a nursing school. My wife is also infected. Me personally, I don't like anything in the medical field. It put me to close to Life's only guarantee.

Nursing to haitian parents' daughters is what doctor/lawyer/engineer/pastor is to their sons...Let's face it, it's all about job security for them...perhaps they should include mortician on that list!!
