If you read this note from TVICE manager JESSIE AL-KHAL, it paints a pretty CLOUDY forecast for the 2009 carnival festivities.
Check out what she told Kompa Magazine.
JESSIE: "I can tell you that there is a lot of Money Difficulties with the Sponsors and La Mairie. The Biggest Problem is Voila and Digicel who were the Biggest Sponsors at the Carnaval the years before, are cutting down because of the Tax that CONATEL is trying to add on the Minutes.
The Price of One "Carreau" to build a Stand went from 25,000gds to 50,000gds. Everybody is UNHAPPY, DJ's, Band A Pied, Orchestre ect...I have a feeling that this year is going to be very hard for everybody to get the Funds in order to meet their Goals.

Pat I remember you had a topic on major bands being dropped by Voila.
After listening to both Kreyol La and Carimi...there is no shoutout whatsoever to Voila.
We'll have to wait to see if T-vice is in the same boat.
Digicel is mentioned in Krezi's carnival. |

Indeed the price for a CARREAU for the stand went up badly...I wouldn't have any problem with it if the money was going to be used for serious stuff....
In 2003...I did varaonsite stand for only 25,000 haitian dollars...this year alone the spots cost me that much...and that is only 4 years later.
That is why the so called " petites entreprises " in haiti can never survive cause carnival is the only best time to reach the masses all at once...but with the cost it's impossible.
All I can say we do changes...but not those kind of changes...

The tax that Conatel wants to impose on the Tele Communications company is ludicrous. Unfortunately, Voila/Comcel, Digicel, and Haitel will have to lay off a lot of employees in order to offset this proposed taxation.
As for the stands, the price has gone up tremendously. All parties involved (bands, business owners, band a pye, DJs) will be greatly impacted by this economic downtrend.

Pat... ala on ou minm sa. !!! Seriously it's ridiculous for the price of the spots for stands this year. There is 4,000$us different for me this year for the same stand size I did last year...can you believe this?

Jessie is so right...Things are very difficult...
As for Carimi and Kreyol La not mentioning Voila, it is understandable you mention your sponsors when the deal is signed so if they must drop their Carnaval early they cannot wait for a sponsor to make up his mind.....
If Krezi mentioned Digicel that must mean that their Carnaval contract is signed...Congrats to Krezi and Digicel. At least we know they are coming out. 
I think we must be ready for some big surprises as far as bands not being able to participate because they cannot find the necessary funds.
