Some prominent members of the media were present at the TEMPO GRAND PREMIERE last night in New York at SOBS. ZAGALO, JUNIOR VAVAL, MIA LOPEZ, NANDY GEORGES and more.
I am going to be brief because the amount of time that I got to see the band was too short in order for me to give a complete assessment of the group.
When I first got there, which I believe was either the 3rd or 4th song, the sound left a lot to be desired, which probably did not help at how the group was presenting itself. At that point, even KM Member hardcore TEMPO supporter CHOUBENZ was not too pleased. KONPAROCKERS even told me AFTER NIA and ALAN came on stage to play with the band, that they sound better when they are playing other people's songs than their ow. KONPAROCKERS said that.
Having said that, I can tell you that when the group played their latest single "PRAN NAN CHO", until the rest of the evening, the music and the crowd came alive MORE than it was from earlier in the evening. THEY SHOWED GREAT POTENTIAL as they started to show what they are capable of. That's when I started getting more into what was going on on the stage, and as I looked around, so did the crowd.
BERTO has the desire and know how to do well in front of the band, with a little more practice/gigs in the front, he will be able to do well. I was also impressed by the DRUMMER and the GUITAR PLAYER. The female vocalist STACY had a very nice sexy dress on, and I can tell you that lots of eyes were on her, but unfortunately, I could not really hear the vocals coming out of her microphone. In terms of stage presence, she fulfilled her sidekick role, but hopefully in the near future, more spotlight will be added on the young lady, in order for her to shine more.
In terms of attendance, it was good, despite the TWO TABLES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE STAGE "TRICK", that I've seen other bands use before, to make the inside look a bit tighter.
The group has the desire/drive to push forward, and if they continue, they CAN become a good addition to the HMI New York scene. THIS WAS THEIR FIRST PERFORMANCE...CONGRATS on a good show.
PS: KUDOS for the STAGE DECORATION, including that TEMPO balloon at the back of the stage.
Here are PICTURES of the TEMPO GRAND PREMIERE last night featuring appearances by ALAN CAVE, TANTAN, and NIA.

Ummmmmmmmmm!.. Jube cool people so let me not go there.. (YIKES!!)
TEMPO!!...
CONGRATS on your first official show!.. Sounds like a bright future ahead of you.. Can't wait to catch you guys live.. CONGRATS MOISE aka JACOMO... (finally ..proud of you Son.. )
Everyone looked good onstage.. Great presence and I like the on stage decorations.. It looked like a REAL Grand Premiere.. which means alot of effort was put into making your first offical night a good one.
Thanks for the reviews and pics, Pat!.. Lets see what this band has to offer since I see it has a few people really going crazy.. I mean literally.. _________________ Walk With Faith... Not Fear... Free Yourself.. "The Vision" |

Thanx for the review Pat... Domi nan jem toujou.... The guys are very talented. The sound did impact their performance, but their energy was intact!!
Tempo started their set with:
1 Ou fem high (2006 single) - slow song
great starter song! Slow and very easy to digest.
2 Taliban (2006 single) - uptempo song
3 I'm in love (Current single) - slow song
The delivery of this song was amazing. Berto did a great job on the vocal
4 Navige (featuring Nia) - slow song
I was mostly impressed by this song. This song has hit potential written all over it. So I think Tempo should push it. A video..anything.
J'ai besoin de toi (Alan/Nia)
Pam Pam Pam (Tantan with Sexy Beef on the bass)
Googa Gaga (Tantan with Sexy Beef on the bass )
Then Tempo played in no particular order:
5 Pran nan cho (Current Single) - uptempo song
6 Awoyo ( new song from their cd ) - uptempo song
This song can do some damage and the crowd was into the animation piece (leve men). Anpil konpa tonbe nan mizik sa a.
On the vocal department: The male voices are very tight and work well together. Stacy's mic was definitely too low. However, I did manage to hear her in the mix and it was ok.
On playlist strategy: Tempo decided to play all their singles (except for pran nan cho) at the beginning of their set. I thought this was a mistake....until I realized that Tempo's style is easy to digest...very commercial. You don't need to know the songs to get into it. That worked to their advantage and they were able to pull it off.
On Musicianship: The crew was great. They took the safe route. No exhibitions, etc. but it worked well for them.
The maestro "Moise" voye anpil keyboard yeswa. Bon bagay! For his next show, he should probably vary the keyboard sounds/tones a bit to add variety to his set.
Animation: Berto did manage to control the crowd at times. I think there is a lot place for improvement in this area. That was expected of course..it's their first live show. As they play more, this issue will be resolved.
Music Identity I haven't listened to the album yet. But Tempo is definitely going after the Carimi crowd. However they don't sound like Carimi like a lot of people thought. The more they play, the more their identity will come out.
Overall:
I had fun watching the guys play. As usual, I go to the back to have a better feel of the band. One could argue that their playlist was too uptempo for the night because some people came to "Ploge". I think they should retailor the playlist to allow a lot of "ploge" moments in the middle of their set. Also, I think they need to restructure their playlist to avoid that "same song playing" feeling.
If tempo plays in NY, would I pay to go see them play: You bet! Now let me go listen to that album!!! |
