The other day I was totally SHOCKED to hear from 2 musicians in one band, when he told me that he felt a bit uneasy/insulted because the band was referred to as an UNDERGROUND band.

Keep in mind that the group has yet to
a) release a CD

b) yet to play Live on a consistent basis (A couple of gigs here and there maybe ever since they started)

c) Not had a hit song on their resume yet.

The explanation given to me by them is that WE HAITIANS tend to think REALLY BAD about a group when they are called an UNDERGROUND BAND. They said that they prefer the term UPCOMING band because the term UNDERGROUND means "TI JAZ" to them.Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked If UNDERGROUND to some is meant as a "TI JAZZ", what is UPCOMING BAND stand for?

In the AMI or any other MUSIC community, when you are called an UNDERGROUND BAND, it's almost like a badge of honor. There are bands that are more liked by a lot of fans when they were UNDERGROUND BANDS, than when they actually blow up and become more popular, or become a bit more known (Mainstream)

*Is there really a difference between UNDERGROUND BAND and UPCOMING band?

*WHY should a band that has yet to do anything of significance in the HMI to add to their resume, be a bit uneasy or insulted by the word UNDERGROUND? Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

What are your thoughts on the matter?

KM!

Gen anpil ayisyen ki pa fin trò konprann ekspresyon anglè sa yo. the term 'upcoming' is usually reserved for bands with young members that don't have a lot of experience in the music market. if your musicians are pushing 40 and the band isn't well known, you're better off going with 'underground.'

Pat,

The way I see it. The term underground band is the next best thing besides being fully established. Some people, like myself for example, live for underground music... I think it's definitely an honor to be called such, but it must apply to the situation.

Underground band means that you already:
Arrow have your own local fan base
Arrow have a single that's working pretty well locally, but not yet released officially
Arrow have the capability to pack up a local spot eventhough you haven't broken into mainstream music yet.

I guess if a band has video or a single out there, and has no fan base, the term underground doesn't apply. I would stick to upcoming.

I would use the term underground if you are posting a video or pic of a band that hasn't released anything official on the market, yet is doing damage in the local clubs.

The term underground is an upgrade to being called "upcoming band", but if it doesn't apply or if the bands in question don't like...hey..

like you said pat in AMI it`s like an honor to be called underground cause that`s when they have the freedom to show their true talent but in the HMI it`s more like you have not been discorvert but it`s still strange for a musician to get upset over that.

Pat,
This is an interresting subject and here's what I was able to pull from Wikipedia discussion's board:
"An underground band primarily is a performing band, in minor venues, with a minimal or zero penetration of the recorded music market."
So according to this quote, any band label as "underground" is a "ti band"

Bien souvent se "term" yo avec "approach" que nou bay mot yo ki kapab kreye yon "insult" nan lespri anpil moun; alors que se pa sa que bagay yo "really means". Let me give you a personal example...

Te gen yon couple que mwen tap explike yon bagay epi mwen te di: "Nou tout (Ayisyen ak lòt nation) vini nan America pou yon "lavi miyò". Yo te faché, pale anpil fè discussion. But when I tried to explain the content of my comments, they both were preferred I used "better life" (alors que se kreyol nou tap pale) instead of "lavi miyò". Wink

So mwen ka konprann band sa ki pa vle yo rele yo "underground" but yo prefere moun rele yo "upcoming band". Peut-être nan lespri neg yo:
underground band = nou anba/atè toujou; alors que
upcoming band = nap monte, nap vini. Rolling Eyes
