Dschaef,

I think the media has done a pretty good job influencing your judgment. I don't care how much you don't like a player, if you're not impressed with the manner in which he scored the 81 points then I don't know what to tell you. Let's remember the Lakers were actually losing that game by 18 points, we needed all 81 points to actually win the game. Let's not forget that he shot over 50% from the field, that's even more impressive. If you play basketball you should at least appreciate the shooting %. If you're just a fan then I would not expect you to understand the degree of difficulty involved in taking 40 shots and making over half of them. The media tries to undermine everything the guy does, but at least they have an ulterior motive which most (smart) folks know exactly what I’m referring to. But when regular folks start buying into that nonsense, that's when it really gets to me. A recently released survey of NBA GMs and players revealed that 95% of GMs say they would select Kobe as the guy to build a team around. More impressive is the fact that 79% of all the players in the NBA believe that KOB is the MVP, included in the 79% are Lebron James, Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett, Tony Parker, Ron Artest, Starbury, Grant Hill and even Chauncey Billups among others. He's not the MVP because he scored 81 points or average 40 pts a game in January but because he is actually the most valuable and the most indispensable player to his team. Chances are he will not win the award this year but he will still be the MVP in the eyes of many.

My prediction:
Kobe for MVP
and the lakers provides the shocker of them all by defeating Detroit in a game 7 to win the NBA crown.

Much love
Raymi.

I do understand your point Jacomo but let's be realistic on this one: how many players of your knowlege winning the season MVP solely by scoring a lot of points in game? If that was the case Iverson will have at least 4 or 5 by now.
The GMs point of view about building a team around Kobe to me is pure emotional, they probably even think the same in a couple of years from now. Kobe is a very good player if not the best on an individual standpoint but i believe it's unfair to hold him responsible of getting L.A back in the playoff this year. I doubt it would have done so without a coach like Phil, it's a fact talent alone can get you anywhere.
As far as i'm concerned your statistics are no news to me, and in any way i'll attempt to obfuscate his many accomplishments this year but that's not how the N.B.A come about choosing the MVP.

I am not a big basketball fan but in my opinion an MVP doesn't necessarily has to be the BEST player in the league which I think Kobe is but has to be able to make the players around him better like Nash.

Hello there LadyKreyol,

If making the players around you better is the main criteria for nominating the MVP then the honor should go to Kobe, let me explain. Smush Parker was a member of the phoenix suns last year, a teammate of Steve Nash. What did he accomplish? Nada, He stunk up the place so bad that he ended up being cut by the Suns. Well, this year as Kobe Bryant's teammate, he's playing the best basketball of his young career. That should count for something. If you take Steve Nash out of the suns lineup, they will still win at least 50 games. They have a pretty talented squad sans Nash. Now you take Kobe out of the Lakers lineup, I doubt they'd win more than 10 games.

Steve Nash is indeed a respectable candidate for the MVP trophy but I don't think I would want to give the award to someone who is 3rd in the league in turnovers and also does not play a lick of defense.

Kobe does not only lead the league in scoring but he's also one of the better perimeter defenders in the game. He locks down the best player on the opposing squad night in and night out (unless of course the best player is a power forward/Center). The guy is top ten in steals and dishing out 5 dimes a game. I can go on and on, and as Mark Jackson said on ESPN the other night, “The scary thing is the fact that kob is only 27 and he’s only going to get better, I suggest we get out those DVD recorders because for the next couple of years we all will be witness to something special.”

Go Lakers!!!!!!!

Jacomo,

You know what's funny? They probably won't give Kobe the MVP title, yet they are building the USA Olympic team around him.

Ask yourself why Iverson wasn't picked... It's KOBE'S TEAM!!!

And now, he's not the MVP? Rolling Eyes
