From what I have seen and from what I have heard over the years, Jacmel has always captured the visual and musical essence of carnival. ONLY MY OPINION.

Anyway Kanaval Jacmel is best when it's shown...it takes a lot to put it in words...Growing up in Jacmel was a privilege to me....
I don't know if some of you people are aware of this but the ingredients of all the beautiful mask you see in Jacmel are " Labou, Papye, Lanmidon, paint " epi that's it...

Sou nivo artistic, kanaval jacmel lan pi bel lontan. Epi tout moun ap enjoy kanaval la nan band san pression. Nan capital la leu ou sou beton an se veye pou we si pa gn moun k'ap vinn pike'w. kanaval jacmel lan is just pure pleasure.
Leu mwen te piti, mwen te nan kanaval jcmel chak annee. Tout moun te degise, w'ap fe show nan lari a. Te gen de moun ki degise en dragon different kouleu epi w'ap kouri deye timoun. Se te bel spectacle.

I dont know about the best.
Ni jacmel, ni port-au-prince gen kote positif pa yo.
Jacmel used to be more traditional, they concentrated more on the visual, colors and costumes were a huge part of it. And it's a more relaxed atmosphere, ou antre nan ti band ou, ou danse san ke sote.
That was before it became so commercial. Kounyea, gen trop moun ki ale, li preske inposib pou ou antre nan yon band telman gen moun, epi moun yo plus sou fe lajan kounyea ke prepare bel costumes, yo flankew menm sa ou te we ane anvan an.
As for POrt-au-prince, for a long time it was a contest of who would have the loudest sound. People didnt care about colors, traditions, costumes. Se te lage cha a, epi jazz yo ap voye monte.
This is year I kow for a fact that they are bringing back a lot of old traditions, they are reviving a lot of Mardi-gras characters that were around a long time ago and have disappeared. Costumes are a must for band a pied, colors are going to be present, epi chars allegorik yo supoze tre bel, bien decore.

So to go back to the question, I cannot say one is better then the other since they both bring different stuff.

Ever since the National kanaval has started it had become proudly to say THE BEST.
I have been enjoying my kanaval ever since i can remember. There has not been that many casualties and they were minimal and most of the time were cause by me and my group lol. Except for one Fatal incident one year were one person was shot and gave the whole town total pacnick.

Now more and more people are coming to enjoy the national kanaval even from abroad. Three years ago we had a lot of tourists. We have some of the most beautiful Chars and masks and we put the best show down avenue baranquilla. It usually start on time. When they say defile will start @ 12pm it starts. We have a lot of bands a pied and few years back they had bought back two of the oldest rivalry band a pieds. We only had two bands and the rivalry and competion has always been safe, funny as hell, en soudine and no name calling, The best way if you asked me. It is safe, fun, and memorable. I would like everyone to enjoy this Kanaval. I have not been for three years now but next year depi peyi on tijan mwen pap negosye. I miss it very much!!!!!!!!!
