OK....MUSICIAN "A" has the PUBLIC in the palm of his hands with his "Son La Ri" smash hit songs. Everything he releases turns to GOLD in terms of HITS....but his songs are not really what you would consider the cream of the crop.
MUSICIAN "B" has great songwritting skills, and it reflects in the lyrics of his songs, as well as the rhythm/harmony...but he CAN'T seem to reach the public in terms of popularity.
Does that mean that makes MUSICIAN "A" a GREAT SONGWRITER or is he just skilled at giving the public what they want?
FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

What's up TOTOVICE?
Does that mean that MUSICIAN "A" or TI REGI as YOUR example is a great/good song writer?

Musician A has a solid for what the public wants and finds a way to write simple, straight to the point lyrics that gets the crowd going.
Musician B has a more poetic approach filled with metaphors...
It's like if KDans and Djakout talk about the same subject, Djakout's song will have a bigger impact. Not because they're more popular but because of the way they will talk about it. The best example is their upcoming song ESKIVÉ. It means what it means!!
One of the best young lyricist that is able to mix very nice lyrics and metaphors and still get everybody on the dancefloor is Ti Joe.

I think T-regi or Musician A is just an average song writer. his songs are not really what you would consider the cream of the crop. but he has what we call " son la ri "

Hmmm... you must be good at giving what the people want...
Some bands tries to give the people what they want and fail miserably (e.g. Dekwochay)
Some in either the A and B situation...you must be good!!! |

In my opinion, there are different ways to look at it. I think that the son la ri a will always have it's place and therefore whoever has the son la ri a will be popular for as long as their version of the son la ri a is in. But as soon as that style of son la ri is gone, so is that musician if his material isn't cream of the crop and memorable as more than just that era's son la ri. So having the son la ri a doesn't automatically qualify you for the title of a great songwriter because it can be considered a "phase" at times.

yes it does but it doesnt mean you are a quality song writer!!! greatness is achieved by recognition...u can write quality songs, but if no one is buying/listening/requesting, u r not great period!!!! bad songs, good songs, if u have the formula to make everyone pay attention to whatever you put out, garbage and/or quality, you are great!!!!!! most hit songs are lacking in depth!!!! |
