 |
|
While people are talking about recession, promoters still don't realize that they can change the game plan with the new bands available.
If promoters take the rest of the year to do shows with new bands, soon the public will adjust to them and the bands asking an arm and a leg will have no choice but to lower their prices due to the less demand for their services.
For the past 6 to 18 months we have some bands that managed to be on the loop despite the hard times that they are facing and some more are joining the list of bands showing consistency.
The Live Konpa Inventory is there...it's just so happen that the promoters are not paying attention. As someone helping a new band (Rafrechi) I'm happy each and every time that I see bands like Tempo-1st Klass-Gabel U-Turn-Kontwol-Chalè-Harmonik- Bel Jazz-Oxygene-Dola-Rafrechi are scheduled to perform at a club or any other event.
I think there are about 12 to 15 bands in the inventory...the decision will be for the promoters to change the game plan...because most of the reports are about the recession and promoters losing money...but they need to know that it starts with the bands asking price. _________________ Did you read your "Konpa Encyclopedia" today... |

A normal Haitian show with one of the "IN DEMAND" band can cost from $11.000 to $18.000 (band asking price/venue/advertising/hotel/food/airlines tickets ect....) and that is before you even sell your 1st ticket for the show. A quarter of that money can be invested in creating and promoting new programs with new faces and new songs...and the public will have "variety" and bands ki pa kanpe sou interesan by showing up late or working for a few minutes for the customer's money, but are on the contrary so hungry that they will show up on time and put on their best acts at a show with an admission price of $20.00 or less.
At the end of the game the promoter may have less people in attendance but will go home on the PLUS side instead of having a show with far more people but still be going home on the MINUS side... avek poch ou ap fèw mal....And I'm sure that many promoters here can testify of having days like that....Bel Bal, but where is the money?....
Kudos to Gabel & Harmonik in Florida, and Dola & Tempo in N.Y for holding on....The recent reviews are encouraging and signs that it can be done. _________________ Did you read your "Konpa Encyclopedia" today... |

At the begining a band like TEMPO may not pull over 200 people alone but a promoter would not know that until he tries. However over time as a new band like TEMPO delivers and the words get around and you add little surprises here and there to spice up the party and also with most of the so called top bands away this summer and most college students partying a price of 20 dollars may be attractive in attendance and small profits to start . Even wioth a loss at the beginning it would be a far lesser loss than $11.000 given to a top band to play for 2 hours. At this point, even those Zouk nights in Miami are profitable. Harmonik obsession night on thursday is not doing bad. Most people want an affordable price and 4 hours of music which in turn will enhance their alcohol consumption in the venue and will benefit the patrons. _________________ We must die before we go to heaven |

I never said to spend X or Y on any band...My point is that it's a combination and a formula for a long term project. There are many ways that the deals can be done...what about doing the shows in partnership with the bands...the bands must understand that much in the early stage of the business. That way the promoter's money can go towards the PROMOTION instead of putting money in the band's bank account that will seat there with no help coming from the band.
HERE IS A SIMPLE SCENARIO OF HELP FROM THE BAND ON A PARTNERSHIP SHOW....
If a band has 12 members and 2 or 3 people in management, if each musician and people in management become sales persons by making phone calls and sending e-mails and other means of helping with the project, they sure will guarantee 10 tickets sold per salesman. Now that will be 120 to 150 tickets plus the tickets sold in ticket outlets when you add that to the promoter's own contact...200 people is nothing my friend...With that kind of help and motivation, those bands can have parties with 300-400 people in a market like N.Y where there are so many Haitians....HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Now if they only rely on having their faces on a flyer and think that they will pull the crowd without a major hit song...they will stay at that level for a long time.
The reason parties can't make those numbers is only because the musicians feel that their job is only to play music...They see the business like if they are already mega stars, but the numbers are there to show differently....Stars and superstars have followers that are willing to pay for the shows....most of our artists have friends, groupies and posees that are trying to get in the shows GRATIS TI CHERIE...
Some people in this business have to face the reality that they have to get to WORK and to stop dreaming....
So our bands have to change their plans on the way they see the BUSINESS part of SHOW BUSINESS. _________________ Did you read your "Konpa Encyclopedia" today... |
