Today marks the 25th anniversary of the first report published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) on what has come to be known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS.
Over the 25 years we have lost more than 25 million lives to the disease and have an estimated 40 million living with AIDS. "Worldwide, 9 out of 10 people carrying the virus have yet to be tested, according to estimates from UNAIDS, the United Nations program on HIV/AIDS."
Most of us can't believe that 25 years later we are talking about the disease and still have no cure. Yet, many are in awe of just how far those diagnosed with the disease have come. From literally receiving a death sentence to now being able to lead regular lives with a rigorous drug regime.
As an activist correctly put it and I quote "The importance of raising and maintaining awareness may never have been greater than it is as we mark a quarter century with the disease."
As I talk to family and friends I realized that we have all adopted an attitude that is really "too laid back" towards the continuing AIDS epidemic. The need for prevention and education should still be on our priority list. _________________ San manti |
