KM: How was your experience at Carnival 2001 in Haiti? How do you think you did?

David: The carnaval was great, there was a lot of work during pre-carnaval we came out tired since the first day but we did ok I personally think that for a first experience we did better then we were expecting our fans and our sponsors were very satisfied and that is what it is about so I think we did a good job.

KM: Which bands do you think did well at the carnival? Which bands did not do too well?
David: I did not have the time to see and compare the bands but from what I 've heard and from the few images that I saw on T.V, I think that in terms of animation Sweet Micky did the best job. In terms of sound quality, it was Djakout Mizik and as far the surprise of the carnival, it was Konpa Kreyol (HA HA HA). It's because they didn't think we had it. As far as those that did not do too well, I can't really say, but I know some had sound problems.

KM: Here's the question everyone wants to know about. Who was KONPA KREYOL's carnival about? In other words, who were you guys talking to?

David: Konpa Kreyol's carnaval wasn't about anybody. We did a song on ourselves letting them know all we did during the year. As far as the "SOW TE YE" theme, it was just something we heard somewhere, we thought it would be good, so we used it and it did work.

KM: How does it make you feel that everyone seems to be talking a lot about KONPA KREYOL? It is very impressive for a new band to be so popular in one year. What do you have to say about that?

David: It's a really good feeling. It gives us confidence on stage and also encourages us to do our best to satisfy our fans.

KM: Do you think some bands in the business are worried about KONPA KREYOL's popularity? Why do you think that is?

David: Of course every band is worried about another band's popularity. It 's not about Konpa Kreyol. It's because it's a small market and when another band emerges it's for sure that some of the leading bands will have to share their fans and obviously they don't like it.

KM: What's next for KONPA KREYOL in terms of albums? Is there a "LIVE" CD coming out or is there a brand new record coming out? When do you see that happening? What month?

David: In terms of projects, we just gave Nouvel Jenerasyon a "Live" album coming out in the near future. We're also planning to put out a test pressing at the end of April to fill out the time for the next CD that

We started working on. That should be ready by the end of the summer. As far as the release, that will depend on Nouvel Jenerasyon.

KM: Will your second CD be different than the first one or will you continue with the same flavor/style as the first one?

David: I don't think it's wise to change something that's working. We will keep the same flavor/style but the experience that we've gained due to a lot of work will be felt on our second CD for the pleasure of our fans

KM: For the people that don't know, please tell us how KONPA KREYOL was created? How did you guys get together?

David: Before Konpa Kreyol we knew each other already. When I left Djakout after playing with them for a year, we decided to do our own band. We started to play with another guitar player but he couldn't continue because he had an accident and was unable to play, and that is when Lohman came in.

KM: Is there a problem between your band and DEGA because LOHMAN left them to join KONPA KREYOL?

David: We needed a guitar player and I had seen Loulou playing in the studio for a band called Golden Stars. When I asked about him, I was told that he was playing for Kristal Secure at the time the band was not active. I went up to Lohman and asked him if he wanted to join us. After meeting the other guys at a practice session he accepted without mentioning DEGA. It 's only when Karl-Fred (Dega's maestro) came back from the States that I knew Loulou used to play with them. One day we had a meeting with DEGA and asked Loulou to choose. He did and his choice was KONPA KREYOL. He has nothing personal with DEGA. It was just because it was an unstable band and the fact is that the band leaders weren't therein Haiti permanently.

KM: What do you say to those who say that Sweet Micky is using KONPA KREYOL a little bit in his battle with T-Vice?

David: The KONPA KREYOL /SWEET MICKY parties were good for the two bands and also for the fans. Everybody got something out of it. At the time it was good for our popularity and as far as SWEET MICKY a good party never hurts. As far as his battle plan with T-VICE, we have had nothing to do with it. People think there's something between T-VICE and us just because we are two young brilliant bands splitting the same market, NOT BECAUSE OF SWEET MICKY.

KM: Why did you leave Djakout Mizik? Did you learn a lot in that group?

David: At the time I was still in high school, I couldn't keep up with the band 's activities so I quit. It was a great experience. I learnt a lot by playing with some remarkable musicians like TI CLAUDE MARCELIN and TONY JEAN BAPTISTE ETC.

KM: Who is David Dupoux's Haitian music idol? What are your favorite Haitian bands on the market today?

David: As far as keyboard players, I like FABRICE ROUZIER and also Zenglen's keyboard player NICKENSON PRUD'HOME. As far as bands, I like Zenglen a lot.

KM: Does KONPA KREYOL control the market in Haiti right now? "Ti" Joe was telling us about all the graduations that you guys played last year in an interview he had with us before.

David: I don't really know how the other bands are doing. KONPA KREYOL is doing great because of hard work and we intend to keep it like that.

KM: David, give us your opinion on each one of these keyboard players. We want the good and the bad. A) Fabrice Rouzier

David: A great keyboard player. He has done a lot for the Haitian music.

KM: Reynaldo Martino?

David: He's one of the best programmers and fits well in T-VICE.

KM: Ti Pouche of Djakout Mizik?

David: He's more of a solo player than a second keyboard type of guy. In terms of solo he's really talented.

KM: Carl Fred (Dega) and Jeff Policard (Ti Doz)?

David: I don't know them as musicians enough to give an opinion. I've heard them play a few times and think they fit their bands

KM: Where do you see KONPA KREYOL in 2 to 5 years?

David: In 2 to 5 years, I think we'll be a greater band and we will do something for our (Haitian) music. As a matter of fact we will keep the same rhythm and we'll be one of the best bands ever.

KM: Any final words? David: Thank you KOMPA MAGAZINE and on behalf of KONPA KREYOL keep up the good work.
