After 10 seasons as No. 8, Kobe Bryant will be No. 24 next season.
The Laker guard will return to the jersey number he wore early in high school at Lower Merion (Pa.). Bryant wore No. 33 as a senior in high school but will not do so with the Lakers because it was retired after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's career.
Paperwork for the jersey change was sent to the NBA office six months ahead of the 2006-07 season, as per league guidelines. A league spokesman said the request would be granted. "He applied, it went through the appropriate channels and was approved," spokesman Tim Frank said.
If a player changes his number, he cannot change it again for three years. Jim Jackson currently wears No. 24.
Bryant's No. 8 jersey is the league's fourth-highest seller, according to sales figures released last week by the NBA. |

He has a lot more fans then people think.. I suggest you go a Lakers road game and you will witness a sea of yellow Kobe Bryant Jerseys. He's the reason why the Lakers, a .500 team at best was the number one road draw in the NBA this season. Better than Miami, Detroit, the spurs, phoenix and cleveland. I don't know if anyone else on the board attended either the NETS/Lakers or Knicks/Lakers games this year, in both games there were more people rooting for the Lake Show then there were for the home team. AMAZING.... |

LAdykreyol ak tout lot yo, i am not doubting the man's talent come on now, i am not a hater the guy is the best player in the NBA now, But Lebron is on his tail.
But come onnnnnnnn so what he changes his number, he's not mikeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.  majority of the NBA or basketball fans would carelessssssss unless if you were Jordan changing from 45 to 23.
And no i am not Living up the past, just a common truth the Magnitude of the player and also the way Jordan effect people is not the same. se sak fe mwen di who caressssssssssssss.

Wonder,
According to published reports, this is the same number he wore in his first couple of years of high school. There are several rumors behind the change. The first has to do with the fact that Laker management is building the team around both Kobe and Lamar since Lamar wears number 7 Kobe believes by changing his number, the Lakers would have a 24/7 one two punch, get it? (This will actually be the new marketing theme for the team).
The second has to do with the fact that he wants a fresh start. He already won 3 championships with the number 8..... 8 X 3 = 24, so it's time to reload.
The third is obvious, to boost up his jersey sales. I personally have all three #8 jerseys and had no reason to buy another one. Now that he changes his number, I along with all other die-hard Lakers fans will have no choice but to get the new #24 thus putting his Jersey sales back to the number one spot where it belongs.
The final rumor is the fact that Nike is in the process of preparing a promotional blitz for the 2006/2007 that none of us have seen in the past, they are determined to put Kob back on the map and make him the face of the brand. It may have been their suggestions that he changes his number. |

BTW Kafou, were a Chicago Bulls fan?
I have a theory that there is really no such thing as a true Chicago Bulls fan outside of Illinois and that almost ALL outside fans of the Bulls were ONLY Jordan fans and once he left their allegiances left with him.
