I just got news from Haiti that drumming legeng and Haitian cultural icon AZOR died in Seau d'Eau last night. I don't have cause of death but I know he has been battling kidney desiese for years.
Truly a sad day for Haitian Culture and Haitian music in particular...
May he rest in peace...

Yes Lenord Fortuné better known as Azor passed away. The singer/drummer represented Haiti at several international shows around the globe and performed as far as Japan. I particularly enjoyed his performances at the Smithsonian Institute shows for a whole week in Washington D.C for the celebration of Haiti's 200th anniversary of independence in 2004.
After a few non-successful moments in the Konpa world, Azor changed his musical direction by joining the racine music movement as one of the drummers of the then famous Wawa. Before long Azor came out with his own band RACINE MAPOU DE AZOR and after the release of his first album "Yo Dim Se Diab Nan Peyi A" which include the song "Vierge Miracle nan Saudo" the master drummer with the raw voice became even more popular than his mentor Wawa.
The artist was taken to a hospital by some of his friends after he performed in Seau d'Eau for the traditional celebration of Mont Carmel (Vierge Miracle) at an annual show on July 16 that usually attracts thousands of voodoo worshipers, Catholics and music fans. _________________ Did you read your "Konpa Encyclopedia" today... |

This is a sad day indeed for Haitian Culture TZ!
Racine Mapou de Azor was one of our greatest living musicians; he played every single instrument if my memory serves me right.
One of my favorite Azor carnavals (2009) Yo San Pitye
RIP Azor Carnaval just won't ever be the same without him. _________________ Bat Chyen An Tan'n Met Li
