I think this thread is totally unfair. Where is it written that a HMI artist cannot attends bals? Whether it's every weekend or once in a while, it's their personal business. People become musicians because they enjoy music, so what's with enjoying themselves with their fellow artists and musicians. I wouldn't go as far as calling attending a party as "driver;" this was outright a disparaging remark.

When AMI artists perform, in the audience there are usually dozens of other HMI artists. Some of my memorable live System tapes are the ones where they were some visiting artists jamming with the band.

Pat, I have to agree with you on that post. Here in Miami, there are a couple of HMI personalities (Band members) that I see everywhere I go. It makes me wonder why aren't they performing somewhere else. Usually these guys are walking around trying to grab everyone's attention, try to get on stage to be seen. I think it's Ok to show up SOMETIMES at a party maybe to promote yourself, your band, an upcoming CD, or even to support a band or artist during a special performance, but to be there every week I think it's a No No. After a while, you are not taken seriously as an artist, but just a GRATEUR. In other words, ou pa gen ayen w'ap remet ak Djaz ou a.

There is a difference between "driver" and "sou moun". Like you guys pointed out, it's not a problem for a artist to go to bals every weekend, or every day for that matter. But this is where the problem lays, now the artist wants to be on stage, he/she wants to sing, play instruments, now that's going too far, and you're being "sou moun". Chill in the VIP section have a few drinks, but don't take the spot light from the performer we all paid to see.

Now "driver" on the other hand - gen neg se pou sa yo vive, misye pap payer entrez, li pa gen auto, li pap payer pou boison, li vin bein costumer, pou li vin "freeload". Apre bal, se ou ki pou bay li wolib, Lap gade tou pa tou, po li wer ki yes k'ap achete bouteille pou li ka vin boire, like his presence next to you is necessitated. Mwen kon manker neg dega... Neg sa yo k'ap driver...
