Yves Arsene Appolon, the Iconic Drummer.

Innovation as we know it is a process of growth and change. Arsene Appolon the iconic Skahshah drummer and composer inherited such skill by adding and multiplying his ingenuity into the making and playing a more modern kompa Direk when he founded the forever Skahshah band in 1974 in NYC.

Before the Skahshah formation, Arsene Appolon born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti began his musical life in the late 1960s with the "Legendaires de Delmas" as a teenager. Then after the departure of ShleuShleu to NYC in 1970, Dada Jakaman, the manager and owner of said band, regrouped and re-introduced the ShleuShleu with young and talented musicians unknown to the public like himself, Serge Rosenthal, Jean-Michel St Victor (Zouzoul), Jean-Elie Telfort (Cubano) Georges Loubert Chancy (Zoie) the late Mario Mayala, Johnny Frantz Toussaint (TiFre), Rodrigue Gauthier (Ti Crane) the late Frederick Mews (Dodo) Yves Jean Baptiste and Gerald Desir.

This regrouping of ShleuShleu lasted with great success for a good while with albums like: "Franky Tet Chov, Ce la ou ye, Ace Frape, Shleu Shleu a Paris, Immortel" etc. Then he left Haiti to migrate to the USA more specifically NYC in 1974 and founded what we the fans and kompa lovers come to idolize and appreciate: Skahshah #1.

Arsene Appolon is one of the leading members of the band who made them famous with their first album "Guepe panyol". It was like a tornado that hit NYC with a brand new sound that also spread in the Caribbean like wildfire. The real big splash came about with their second and third album "Les dix commandemnts" and "Synthese Musicale".

Arsene Appolon was the architect of such albums with a mega hit song like "Haiti" which became a classic and one and most songs that touched a nerve of Haitians living abroad. Arsene Appolon didn’t just write one song. He also wrote and co-wrote those: "Inde with Loubert Chancy, Regret with Loubert Chancy, Lejour, Immaculee, Neg Guinin, Secret, Un Sourire, Bontan etcetera.

Once he left Skahshah, he then formed Skahshah Plus. That didn’t work out too well. So he tried again by gathering other talents notably Ti Manno and founded “Astros de New York” with hit song like “Bingo. Unfortunately, the existence of that band also short lived.

Arsene is a leader with different ideas that interfere with other members of Skahshah. Although one of the leading factors of their dispute is monetary, Arsene also lives in Martinique which makes it harder for a promoter to bring him to the State at an extra cost. Was he living in the continental USA, the arrangement would have been a bit easier to be re- integrated into the group that is if the consensus among the other members could be as simple as a handshake.

The Skahshah spectrum begins with Loubert Chancy but it ends with Arsene Appolon because he was the founding father of Skahshah. In addition, if today, Arsene is not an integral part of the beloved Skahshah is simply because of strong personalities that exist among themselves just like a wall of irrational behavior that impedes their judgment and their reasoning.

One thing for certain, though, regardless of all the snafus that incapacitate the existence of the band, one has to forever remember that Arsene Appolon is as iconic as many others who helped to keep this music alive.

Mr. Appolon, although I am one of your critics but that doesn't stop me for bowing to your talent and your contributions not just to Skahshah but to our Kompa Direk as a whole. My sincere hope is to see you once again with your brothers on stage even if it's for one night. Thank you Sesene.
